Culminating Blog Reflection

When I first started the Capstone Project I didn't know what to expect, but now that i'm reaching the climax of this project I realized that working on this project was rewarding and enjoyable! To complete all aspects of this project we had to use critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. For the physical, I would take what my mentor taught me and apply it to my own work. If I needed help or clarification, I would look at examples or ask questions.  As for collaboration, when my mentor provided the class time to work on an assignment, we, as a class would work together and give each other suggestions and praise. To be creative, I would include my style in my work while applying the techniques my mentor taught me in my work. For my paper, I analyzed and annotated articles, books, websites, and a film for my research. I had to  really think about what I was reading to really have a good understanding of my topic, which was Media. As for communication, I asked a couple of teachers and friends to read my paper for their opinion and suggestions.

Through out the Capstone Project I gained many skills. Personally I feel like I improved on my artistic skills and my writing skills. I learned to be patient if something doesn't come right away. I learned that taking risks and going the extra mile will give you self-satisfaction and an abundant amount of confidence.I feel like I grew socially because the art class I took for the Capstone Project had about 10-15 people in it, and being a small class, it really gave us a chance to bond and learn about each other. I also grew socially because I became close to my mentor Brook, she was a wonderful teacher to learn from and she was very approachable and having that easy relationship with her made me feel comfortable to ask her for her opinions on my work and ask questions when I needed help. Intellectually, I feel like I have a better understanding on my research topic.

Overall, the process of this project was a fun experience even if there was times that were challenging. With the research paper, I had trouble with putting my finding together in a six page essay. I also had difficulties with coming up with resources. To overcome those obstacles, I took my findings and elaborated on the topic and added more details and examples. I used Google Scholar to find more resources, Google Scholar helped me narrow down my topic and gave me several resources to choose from. Some other challenges I faced was in my art class. I had trouble with "technicality", which is utilizing techniques in my own work, also how I use techniques and how I used tools such as pencils or brushes. To overcome those obstacles I asked my mentor for help and opinions. I would go home and practice technique over and over again for hours until I was content with the results.

Mentor Blog #7

March 3
Today I sat at my kitchen table and I did more practice. I practiced drawing more still life and i also painted them in. I feel like I'm getting better at perspective and drawing negative space. I also spent time looking at my past work to see what I can improve on. I compared my past work and my current work to see my progress. My mentor told me I improved so much since our first meeting together. hearing that makes me feel more confident in my work and techniques. I forgot to mention this in my last blog but, the last class I attended was my last class. I'm going to miss the friends I made and working with them. I feel like we all improved since we started.

In todays class we practiced how to control a brush while painting to get the effect you want. it was pretty difficult to get a hang of because we only had one brush size and we had to manipulate the brush to make thin lines or thick lines. Our practice assignment was to create thick wavy lines and thin wavy lines. My mentor gave me positive feed back on my practice. After our assignment, I felt more confident in the technique. After we learnt that technique we continued to do more artist imitations. We took the brush techniques and applied it to our work. My goal is to create a piece using this technique.

My mentor provided me supplies to bring home to practice my technique. At home I practiced all the techniques she showed me and tried to imitate more artists work. I also practiced drawing and painting still-lifes. I created Three painting for practice and I feel pretty content with them. I realized it was more difficult to practice at home because there was no one there to tell me if i was doing something wrong and I couldn't ask questions. But I felt like I improved a lot in drawing and color mixing. My next goal is to improve on artist imitation and still life drawings.

In todays class, my mentor gave us time to practice the techniques we learned in our last session which was glazing which is stating with one color then layering over and over again. we practiced glazing trees. My mentor told me I was improving on it! My mentor gave us an assignment of "imitating" an artists drawing or painting. she explained imitating an artist is a good way to practice technique. She provided us with books filled with artists work. The artist i choose to imitate was Marcel Dzama. It was a challenge drawing the actual picture and getting the artists style down and to mix colors to get it similar. All in all it was an interesting assignment and I had fun completing it! My goal is to improve on drawing skills!

In today's class we started off with practicing basics again. Then my my mentor taught us how to draw and paint a still life, which is inanimate objects. She taught us how to incorporate basic techniques into the art work. Then for the rest of the class time we practiced drawing still life by using bowls of fruit. It was actually really difficult to get the art work to look realistic, best time I see my mentor, I hope to improve drawing in details better
